Matches & tournaments

How do I play a match?

The exact steps vary by game, but in general:

  1. Join an instant match, create your own open match, or send a direct challenge.
  2. Add your opponent as a friend on Xbox Live, PSN, or PC (Steam, Riot, Battle.net) using their Gamertag or Username.
  3. Go to the game mode where you can play with/against a friend online.
  4. Send a game invite to your opponent.
  5. Check and confirm the match rules and settings on the match page on GAMEGATE as well as in-game on your console.
  6. Start the match.
  7. Report the score on the GAMEGATE match page. Dota 2 and Valorant are working fully automated, and you don't have to report - you only need to decide how much Honor you want to give to your opponent.

IMPORTANT: We recommend screen recording all of your matches on your console when competing on GAMEGATE. Be sure to take pictures/screenshots of the match's final score in case of a dispute about the match results. You can also check if your results are shown on tracker.gg.

How do I report?

It would be the best way for you if you always track your results after each game, so in case of a MISMATCH you can easily prove the correct score. A so-called MISMATCH occurs when you or your opponent report different results. You can upload a JPG or PNG screenshot of the results. We must be able to see each player's name and exact stats clearly.

TIP: If you play on Steam, you can easily take a screenshot with any keyboard key you have assigned (e.g. "P"). During the game, or after the results screen is shown, simply press that key and a screenshot will be saved in Steam under the corresponding game. By scrolling down, you will find it on the right side (picture 1). Please make sure you set the screenshot visibility to "public" (picture 2).

TIP: You can try to get your stats on tracker.gg by searching for your game and the correct result. Simply add the link on GAMEGATE "Report Result" screen.

How do tournaments work?

Tournaments are competitions where multiple players must win enough consecutive games to earn a share of the prize pool. Prize money is typically reserved for 1st to 6th place.

  • Tournaments start at specific times. When you see a tournament you want to play in, register to reserve your spot. You'll receive a notification and/or email 10 minutes before the tournament starts.
  • If you leave a tournament before it starts, your entry fee money will be refunded instantly.
  • If the tournament is full, you can join the waitlist and hope a spot opens up.
  • Once the tournament begins, the bracket is randomly generated. Make sure you block out enough time to complete the tournament if you make it far!
  • You have to "Check-In" minutes before it starts because we want to have a clean matchmaking.
Are there free tournaments?

We post free GAMEGATE tournaments on our IG story and Twitter timeline a few days or even hours before the event. You can you join the tournament for free and even if you are under 18. Tournament prizes can vary between cash or goods like Gaming Gear, travel to gaming events, etc.

Turn on Twitter notifications for @gamegate.gg or Instagram Stories notifications for @gamegategg and never miss a free cup to win big!

What is HONOR and how it works?

After each game you played, no matter if Head-2-Head or a Tournament, you can give your opponent HONOR to reflect your impression on their behaviour, fairness and sportsmanship – because this matters.

How do I know if a player is a fair one?

You can check a player's HONOR score on each profile to see if they play fairly and correctly. Each user can Honor other users, and we add our rating to it. So, you can say it is a mix of:

  • Dispute ratios = disputes/matches played.
  • Player reviews = other players rating
Can we finish our game if the match timer expires?

YES! Please extend the match if possible. If not please let the admin know in the chat that you're finishing your game.

Why am I waiting so long for my next match?

The following issues can be the reason:

  • Certain circumstances can delay your next opponent
  • The match timer was extended
  • The score wasn't reported or accepted
  • The match expired while awaiting an admin ruling
  • A Player hasn't shown up

Click "Bracket" to find the match you're waiting on

What are Rookie Tournaments?

Rookie tournaments are competitions exclusively for ranks Iron to Silver. You must have acquired a PLR to enter, which you get after playing around three Head-2-Head matches. This includes all kinds of Rookie Tournaments, such as Golden Rookies and Rookie Big Balls.

How does the GAMEGATE Ranking work?

Each player has a GAMEGATE Rating, or PLR, ranked in 7 tiers and each tier with 5 levels, which is an indicator of how good a player is at a game. Each game has a different ranking. This is determined by the ELO algorithm, which considers factors such as the number of wins and losses a player has, who they have played against, and more. The better your opponents are, the faster you level. Ranking is assigned after 3 head-to-head games. A new player's rank displays as "Iron 1"

What is the difference between reporting a result and reporting a player?

Reporting the correct result means you report the person or team as the winner of the match who has been displayed as the winner at the end of the Game on your device (best to make a screenshot), EVEN if you think that that win is not valid because it was due to breaking the rules or cheating.

If you believe your opponent(s) have broken rules of the Game or used cheats, you can report the player(s) and specify the infraction and give evidence to prove your allegation. Of course, you can also give them a low honor score. Our admins will investigate the report and sanction every infraction. Cheating will get you expelled the first time we catch you. NO SECOND CHANCES.

How do disputes work? How is a winner determined?

If you and your opponent submit conflicting results, the game will be flagged as a MISMATCH, and the status will be set to disputed. To prove that you have reported correctly, upload picture and video evidence to the game page under "Report Results" to prove that the game went as you claim. The evidence must be submitted within 10 minutes.

A GAMEGATE admin will evaluate the evidence and make a final decision.

Why did I lose my dispute?

The most common reason disputes are lost is due to lack of valid evidence:

  • No video evidence
  • No screenshots
  • Little to no explanation of the issue
  • Incorrect score submitted
  • No time-stamped evidence
  • Opponent's gamertag not visible

Recording your gameplay is the single most important thing when playing money matches.

Below are general rules and guidelines for all GAMEGATE matches:

  • If you receive an invitation on your console that doesn't match the rules listed on this match page, DO NOT play the match.
  • If you play the match, lose and submit a dispute, GG admins will not approve your dispute.
  • Here at GAMEGATE, we value fair play, and make what we believe is the fairest decision.
  • Dispute determinations are strictly at the discretion of our admins.
My opponent broke a rule in our match. What do I do?

Please review all game settings before the match starts, and again as soon as the game starts. If a game is played with incorrect settings, it is not disputable.

If you receive an invitation on your console that does not match the rules listed on your match page, do not play the match. If you begin the match, lose and submit a dispute, we cannot rule in your favor. By playing or starting a match, you're confirming that the rules were correct and agreed upon.

Examples of broken rules:

  • "My opponent set the match to 4 minutes when it was supposed to be 5 minutes"
  • "My opponent used a team that we didn't agree on"
  • "My opponent used a different gamertag"
  • "My opponent plays from another server than agreed"
  • "My opponent uses AIM-Bots" (Video is essential in this case)
Why is my account locked?

If your account is locked, we have evidence of you breaking our Terms of Service or Privacy Police. Your account may be under review for one of the following violations:
